Finally You Can Watch Nicolas Cage As Superman!
The Death Of Superman Lives reveals new production footage of probably the worst casting decision in comic book history.
There's a long and storied history of the movies that Nic Cage almost ruined, and the two that tend to rank highest on the red alert list are when he almost played the Scarecrow for Joel Schumacher's thankfully cancelled Batman Triumphant and the time he was almost cast as a long-haired Superman for Tim Burton's Superman Lives. Despite the sighs of relief that came in hindsight with the death of both projects, both still hold a good deal of intrigue - it would have been brilliant to see an unhinged Cage in full flow as Scarecrow for instance, and the very idea of a Superman movie written by Kevin Smith, directed by Burton and starring a muscular Cage as a the Man Of Steel is perversely beautiful. We've already seen images of Cage in the potential Supes outfit he might have worn, but now, thanks to Comic Con and a kickstarter campaign built on that afore-mentioned intrigue, some footage of the actor as Superman has been released. The convention hosted the debut of the first full length trailer for director Jon Schnepp's crowd-funded documentary, The Death of Superman Lives, which will detail the plight of Burton's doomed attempt to make a Man of Steel movie in the late '90s. The trailer features rarely seen footage of Cage testing in the Superman outfit, showing off his luxurious long locks... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt9fxWq5qg0 Further revelations from the documentary confirm long-suspected details: Kevin Spacey had been approached for Lex Luthor, Chris Rock would have played Jimmy Olsen, Courtney Cox was in the running for Lois Lane, and Tim Allen was apparently negotiating to play Brainiac. Talk about your dodged bullets. Intriguingly there was also going to be a cameo for Batman, proving that the film would have been terribly hipster in pre-dating the Superman vs Batman film by almost 20 years had it been released as planned in 1998.
