Mondo Culture! 10 Shockumentaries

9. Faces of Death 2 (1981)

faces of deaht 2 The follow up to the smash hit Faces of Death, which was another Mondo movie produced for the Japanese market, Faces of Death 2 is again directed by Conan Lecilaire and features the same stupid narrator - Dr Francis B Gross whose expertise and credentials are as useless as a sack of beans. He knows as much about death as I know about quantum molecular physics. Which is nada. Nevertheless, I have included this film in the list because it is a very good example of the 'death movie' - a Mondo movie bastard offshoot which panders to the lowest common denominator - the desire to watch people dying on camera or the camera panning over dead bodies from plane accidents, avalanches (in the case of Faces of Death 2) and other disasters. The original Faces of Death features some death but is mainly simulated. Faces of Death 2 ups the gruesome ante and includes a lot more real life footage such as the 1980 boxing match between Johnny Owen and Lupe Pintor. Owen was flattened in the ring and later died of his injuries. That gives you a clue as to what a cavalcade of misery you will be subjected to in Faces of Death 2. I found the original Faces of Death quite silly but this one is mean spirited and highly gruesome.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
