2. The Pig And Death

Following the dream ballet, the final act of this film only continues to get weirder and weirder.

After finishing work for the night, the janitor returns to sit in his car in the middle of the freezing night. Growing more distressed and delirious, he hallucinates the advertisement for the ice cream parlour the young couple visited earlier before being greeted by a cartoon pig who leads him down the school hallways.

To grasp the symbolism behind this encounter, we must recall the story Jake tells his girlfriend about the pigs that used to be kept on the farm. Following days of neglect, the animals were found to have been eaten from the inside by maggots. This story is reiterated when the talking pig tells the janitor that “Someone has to be a pig infested with maggots, right? It might as well be you.”

Here, the pig is a metaphor for death. The pig, like everything else, is imagined by the janitor, manifested by a hallucination as he freezes to death in his car. In this sense, the journey the janitor takes is a metaphorical one to the afterlife, which brings us to the net scene.
