After six years of failed attempts, Warner Brothers have lost the feature rights to
Conan the Barbarian. Don't worry though fantasy sword and sandal fans, the news from
Variety today is that New Line Cinema are looking to purchase the rights to make a film based on
Robert E. Howard's warrior. However don't expect to see Conan anytime soon. If New Line are successful in picking up the rights they will have to start from scratch on the movie, as Warner Brothers currently own all of the early draft scripts that they never managed to turn into a feature. Of course it's been 25 years since
Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as Conan the Barbarian in the cult classic fantasy movie that really introduced Arnie to the world, before he followed up with the sequel
Conan the Destroyer and before starring in his most iconic role as
The Terminator. Since 1984, there have been several attempts at making a new Conan movie with
The Wachowski's,
Robert Rodriguez,
John Milius and as recently as last year
Boaz Yakin hired to helm for WB. New Line though, will no doubt look for a new director and of course they also have the same problem as
The Terminator 4. Who can replace Arnie?
