Ranking October 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

How does Doctor Strange measure up?

Doctor Strange Trolls
Disney & Fox

The summer stragglers are done with, and we're officially deep into awards season. October typically sees studios trotting out major awards contenders while also counter-programming this with more mainstream fare, resulting in a something-for-everyone buffet of cinematic goodness.

Barring a few high-profile busts, October was a consistently solid month for movies of all kinds, with a number of long-awaited productions either living up to or exceeding the hype, with both big-scale and more intimate offerings getting their fair shake. The box office glory might've gone to Marvel Studios as usual, but major critical plaudits went to something with a far smaller price tag.

As for what November holds? Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi Arrival, Ewan McGregor's directorial debut American Pastoral, Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them, Robert Zemeckis' Allied, Bad Santa 2 and much, much more.

Here are October 2016's movies ranked from worst to best...

17. Inferno

Doctor Strange Trolls
Columbia Pictures

RottenTomatoes Score: 20% (4.4/10 average score)

Box Office: Hilariously, Inferno fell way below its North American box office projections, being beaten by Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween in its opening weekend.

The film fared much better internationally, and though it won't be a hit on par with the prior two Dan Brown adaptations, it's already doubled its fairly modest $75 million budget (half that of the previous film's price tag), and could easily do it three times before it's all said and done.

That poor American performance might be enough to kill the franchise, though.

Verdict: Even fans of The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons might struggle to give this woefully lazy, even dull mystery thriller a pass, which tries to coast on general audience goodwill towards Tom Hanks...and fails miserably.

With a generically forgettable plot, phoned-in performances, hilariously bad dialogue and terrible CGI, it borders so often on being a self-parody but never quite exhibits such self-awareness. Absolutely terrible.
