6. The Shark - Jaws

Steven Spielberg's Jaws is of course one of the greatest horror films of all time, and proved so successful in making the general public fearful of sharks that Spielberg later expressed his regret at causing such a perception shift.

Yet such is the effectiveness of Spielberg's filmmaking - even with a malfunctioning shark prop and limited screen time for the creature, it's gut-wrenchingly unnerving every time it shows up to chow down on somebody.

And so, it's enormously satisfying when Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) finally gets a scuba tank into the man-eating shark's mouth, after which he shoots the tank with a rifle, the resulting explosion blowing it to smithereens.

While the shark is driven purely by instinct unlike most of the killers on this list, it's still a tremendous relief to see it put down after two hours of almost unbearable suspense - capped off by Brody's iconic one-liner, "Smile you son of a..."
