One of the biggest questions posed by the film's ending is the exact nature of Doctor Strange's spell. How does it work? Does it erase all computer records of Peter? Does it erase photographs? How can he do anything in life without a proper identity?

As it turns out, it's not just the fans asking these questions - the filmmakers are too.

When asked about the spell by Variety, Sommers cheekily replied "this is the first time that we’ve ever discussed this", before going on to explain that the emotion of the finale was more important to them than the details of the spell:

"We were like, 'do we do a Back to the Future kind of thing where you see him fading out of photos? Does he still have a driver’s license or a passport?' It just led to more questions. We decided, let’s try to do it in the most satisfying way and just focus on the emotion of it. And then if people have questions about some of those details that didn’t get answered here, we’ll answer them hopefully in another movie somewhere down the line.”

It was undoubtedly the right move to put more effort into the emotion and characters, because, as Sommers indicates, any lingering questions about the spell can be answered in future MCU projects. And at the end of the day, the details of the spell don't really matter, as long as we know the overall effect!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
