Star Wars: Ranking Every Final Battle From Worst To Best

3. Revenge Of The Sith

Attack Of The Clones
Lucasfilm

In terms of sheer payoff, it's hard to top the finale of this trilogy-capper. It was the moment that everyone had been waiting for ever since Vader first stepped into that hallway in the opening minutes of A New Hope. It was the moment the entire prequel trilogy had been building to, the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan that ended with Anakin truly becoming Darth Vader.

And boy did Lucas deliver. Anakin and Obi-Wan's duel on Mustafar is not only among the most impressively choreographed duels of the saga, it's one of the most emotional. The performances by Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christiansen are feats of both physicality and emotional depths, the visuals are Lucas at his bombastic best, and John Williams delivers one of the best scores he's ever written.

And that's not all. To top it off, this duel is intercut with ANOTHER lightsaber duel, in the form of Yoda and Palpatine's fight in the chambers of the Senate. Lucas ramps up the tension and escalates each of them well past the point of sanity, and delivers some truly unforgettable action beats in the process. For a film whose ending was firmly established nearly thirty years before it was ever released, Revenge of the Sith's finale delivers in entirely unexpected ways.
