Star Wars: Snoke Was NEVER Going To Be Darth Plagueis

After confirming (again) not so long ago that Snoke is not Darth Plagueis, Star Wars canon supremo Pablo Hidalgo seems to have taken a lot of heat from angry fans. He's variously been lambasted for "dumbing down" Star Wars, criticising fans and being needlessly misleading, and a lot of it seems to come down to some people's resistance to his rebuttal of that theory.

Hidalgo is aware of the criticism (and seems to revel in it - why wouldn't you after all, it's just silly), but he has reiterated that he's not to blame for the Snoke/Plagueis refusal.

Quite whether that will be clear enough for the most resistant fans remains to be seen. Don't count on it.

The most intriguing thing to take from this is that there is a plan and there has been one for a while. That might not mean that Snoke's identity has been plotted out for years, but it certainly suggests that there's absolutely no plan to bring back Darth Plagueis, no matter how much fans want it.

Surely we'll see the character at some point in a prequel, but the chances of a revival are zero.

Even despite this, it's guaranteed that Episode VIII will be distilled down into its component, reductive questions: who are Rey's parents, who is Snoke, who is Finn? As if the answers for all future Star Wars narrative decisions have been previously hinted at in canonical material. That's not exactly healthy, but it's inevitable.
