7. Why Did Luke Disappear?

Turns out Where's Luke wasn't just a hashtag - it's actually plot of the goddam movie. The very first sentence in the opening crawl is "Luke Skywalker has vanished" and things just BB-8 from there; J.J. Abrams could have called this The Search For Luke if he hadn't already used up all his Star Trek goodwill with Into Darkness.

In the end (and I mean the very end - Luke isn't in the movie until the very last minute) we find out he's been standing on top of a rock in the ocean looking at the sea and thinking about he hates sand like his Dad, but because the film chose to make simply seeing the main character of the series again the big finale we don't get anything in the way of explanation for why he turned his back on the galaxy in the first place.

There's suggestions he ran off when Ben Solo turned to the dark side or that he was hunting down the very first Jedi Temple, but that's just speculation from Han and doesn't acknowledge the suggestion he needs to return to save the Force. Whatever he is up to though, Mark Hamill looks great. For the two second seconds he’s on screen.
