Luke Skywalker's opening monologue in the trailer has triggered plenty of theories, but perhaps none have been more widespread than the idea that Darth Vader is actually still alive and will play a role in the upcoming film. The theory stems from the use of tense in the monologue, where Luke says that his father "has" the Force, rather than "had". Since the speech is lifted from Return Of The Jedi, this could simply be a matter of transcription, although it's unlikely that the filmmakers would have stuck so closely to the point of messing up continuity. Some have gone so far as to suggest that it could be Vader's arm seen reaching for R2-D2 in the trailer, and, as there's been no clear confirmation on who the lead bad guy will be, there's a slim possibility these theories could hold some weight. It's unlikely though - after all, we all saw Vader die in Return Of The Jedi, not to mention the fact that Luke then burned his body to a crisp on a funeral pyre. There's a good chance he could still return as a Force ghost in the form of Anakin Skywalker, but given that his actions before his death saw him reject the dark side, his status as chief Star Wars villain has presumably been revoked.
