5. Return to Silent Hill
Here's an outcome surely nobody saw coming.
After spending almost two years sat in post-production limbo, Return to Silent Hill was finally released to near-universal critical scorn, naturally leading many to assume that the $23 million video game adaptation would be a catastrophic flop.
And that certainly seemed to be the case at first, given that it grossed just $3.2 million domestically on its opening weekend, unaided by the North American winter storm keeping many people from cinemas in January.
Yet the big shocker here is that Chinese audiences turned out in droves for the film, enough that it grossed $20.6 million in the region alone, helping Return to Silent Hill reach a wildly unexpected $47.8 million total.
Going by the usual napkin maths for lower-budget films, Return to Silent Hill likely needed to double its budget with $46 million to be considered a theatrical success, and that it ultimately did - albeit just barely.
For a film many dismissed as a sure-fire flop the moment the woeful first trailer dropped, though, this is a bafflingly solid outcome.
