The Batman: 7 Challenges Matt Reeves Must Overcome

2. Taking A New Approach To Batman

Audiences have seen Batman’s impressive physical attributes in every movie he’s been in. Everyone knows that he’s an unparalleled martial artist and has an array of sweet gadgets to throw at people which, while very entertaining is also going to reach a saturation point if this is all The Batman has going for it.

Reeves needs to have the confidence to allow quieter moments into the proceedings, let us empathise with Bruce Wayne and also let him flex his often-overlooked muscle – a genius level intellect. Batman is known as The World’s Greatest Detective for a reason but we never get to see him use these skills in action on the big screen, if he wants to distance himself from previous versions of the character, this would be a good route for Reeves and the team to go down.

It would be a compelling approach to split the movie 50/50 between Bruce Wayne and Batman, exploring the toll it takes on him mentally and allowing for audiences to get closer to him than they ever have before.

There’s a risk that Reeves will want to play it safe to keep the studio happy and make it overly heavy on the action but if he’s willing to take on the greater challenge of a more nuanced Batman, he has the potential to create something truly special.
