In an era of video nasties and over the top grotesqueness, it's this affecting image of a young girl sat in front of a static TV, with the tagline 'They're here', that stands out.
Unlike the majority of horror artwork at the time, where designers and movie marketers tried to stuff as much guts, gore and violence onto the visuals as possible, Poltergeist's poster steps back and leaves the horror to your imagination. The feeling of impending dread, shadows surrounding the TV, and the chilling tagline, combine to create immense unease, proving that the unseen and unknown is a much more powerful tool than simply showing what lurks in the darkness.
