Japanese fans of SEGA's freakish half-fish half-man virtual pet Seaman enjoyed a Christmas miracle at the tail end of 1999, when the company released a time-limited yuletide version of their second strangest Dreamcast title. Christmas Seaman was effectively a convoluted sub-aquatic SMS, allowing punters forking over ¥2800 to send a festive-themed message to a loved one with the corresponding 'reception disk'.
As pointless as all that sounds, SEGA deemed it a big enough deal to release a very special edition of their swansong console. The beautiful bright red Dreamcast, somewhat spoiled by the Seaman sticker slapped on it, was only available in Japanese branches of entertainment retailer HMV and was limited to just 850 units.
Anyone who gratefully received the commemorative console on Christmas morning also bagged a proof of ownership certificate, which we're sure still hangs proudly on walls of homes in Japan alongside university diplomas to this day.
