When it comes to the most memorable aspects of Dark Souls, you'd struggle to find someone who doesn't point out the difficulty, the bosses and the combat. But there are so many things that are always overlooked, and arguably, one of the biggest accomplishments overall is FromSoftware's level design.

Obviously not every level is gold *cough cough* Lost Izalith *cough cough*, but when Dark Souls gets its groove on, it's unchallengeable.

Tight, interconnected levels that always find a way to surprise the player in where the lead. Just how intricate these levels are is often lost on a first-time player, but they are so well connected that even veterans find themselves stumbling onto something new every now and again.

And even in touting Dark Souls' level design as being intricate, some of the best areas in the game are considered so simply for the impact and gorgeous spectacle they have to offer made all the more stunning by the remaster's improved graphics. So much so, that there is no better way to experience these levels than in stunning HD and at 60fps. In fact, some levels are at their best with the new frame-rate.

The Great Hollow seems like a strange way to start of this list, but it is perhaps one of the most underrated levels in the game. Most people write it off as a simple transitory area between Blighttown and Ash Lake, but in and of itself, it is incredibly meticulous.

First, there is the fact that it uses vertical heights like no other area in the game. Second, it's incredibly difficult to navigate and drop down. And third, the area had to factor in for the possibility that the player would go down it before being able to warp between bonfires.

Which means that it is designed in such a way that the player can climb all the way back up the massive drops that they made to get down there. That and the fact that it is easily the most hidden area in the game with most players not even knowing it exists.
