9. Square Enix Goes Full Game Of Thrones - Final Fantasy XVI
The latest instalment in Square Enix's RPG saga centres around the firstborn son of Rosaria's ruling family, Clive Rosfield. Clive is tasked with protecting his younger brother, Joshua; the future king and current wielder of the Summoning Eikon, Phoenix. As Joshua's duke prepares to have the boy returned safely to the capital, he's intercepted by a rival faction.
And by "intercepted," I mean the soldiers slaughter the duke's poor Chocobo, soaking the cobblestones below in the feathery creature's blood. The duke is then impaled, spraying his innards across Joshua's traumatised face.
Even though this sequence is followed by an epic battle between iconic Eikons, Phoenix and Ifrit, this gory encounter stands out more. Final Fantasy rarely shies away from violence, but the beloved series has never showcased bloodshed on this scale. Did we really have to see a poor Chocobo get butchered?
It was risky to have the story open so barbarously but it instantly demonstrated Final Fantasy XVI was going to be much darker than its predecessors. Although this entry has plenty more shocking moments, baring witness to this R-rated massacre hit hardest.
