10 Greatest Super Mario Spin-Offs Of All Time

8. Luigi's Mansion

Luigi’s Mansion recently saw it’s third game arrive on Switch but back on GameCube, this haunted subseries took life as a console launch title. Released in 2001, it was Luigi’s second starring role (You didn’t forget SNES game Mario Is Missing!, surely?), winning a mansion from a contest he never entered.

Advising Mario to meet him there, Mario is nowhere to be found and upon entering, Luigi is soon attacked by ghosts. Guided by Professor E. Gadd, he provides our green plumber with a Poltergust 3000 vacuum cleaner to capture ghosts, alongside a “Game Boy Horror” communicator. Discovering this is the work of King Boo, he sets out to recapture these ghosts and rescue his brother.

Luigi’s Mansion launched to critical success, receiving criticism for its campaign length but spawned two sequels, an arcade spinoff and even a 3DS remake. Whilst arguably surpassed by its sequels, it’s a refreshingly spooky entry in the Super Mario universe and undeniably left its mark.
