10 Greatest Super Mario Spin-Offs Of All Time
5. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Yoshi has gone onto become one of Super Mario’s most
recognisable characters. First appearing in Super Mario World in 1990, this
loveable dinosaur companion has now seen many adventures of his own, most
recently Yoshi’s Crafted World on Switch.
His greatest game remains his first however, back in 1995 on
SNES. Titled as a Super Mario World sequel, Yoshi’s Island became notable for
its hand-drawn graphical approach, providing a significant contrast to Donkey
Kong Country’s 3D approach.
Seeing a stork delivering Baby Mario and Luigi, we find this stork attacked by Kamek, Bowser’s most prominent Magikoopa. Luigi is kidnapped but Baby Mario instead falls into Yoshi’s care. Realising that Baby Luigi is within Baby Bowser’s castle, it comes down to the Yoshis to reunite these brothers.
It launched to critical acclaim and is widely considered
amongst the greatest platformers ever created. Whilst it received two direct
sequels across the DS/3DS, those and his other adventures just cannot beat the
original.
