9. The Skeleton Key Conundrum - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim, like other Elder Scrolls games, allows the player to collect powerful Daedric artifacts.
Well, actually, it lets you collect most of them and then hold onto one for a quest or two.
Out of all the powerful Daedric items in the game, the Skeleton Key of Lady Nocturnal is arguably the most useful because it allows you to open any lock in the game without the risk of breaking your lockpicks.
The key is the main subject of the latter half of the Thieves Guild’s questline. You and your closest Guild members agree to retrieve the artifact from the Guild’s leader-turned-traitor, Mercer Frey, and give it to Nocturnal in exchange for breaking the curse cast upon your organization.
Now, every other Deadra in the game lets you keep the artifact you retrieve, so you might think Nocturnal will do the same. However, after you delve into several lengthy dungeons and travel across all of Skyrim to take it from Mercer, the game immediately tells you to bring it back to Nocturnal, and afterward, you’ll never see it again.
Of course, you can refuse to finish the quest to keep it, but then you’ll never be named the Thieves’ Guild’s leader.
Decisions, decisions.
