Though THPS 3 would improve on one of the finest gameplay formulas of all, it had to start somewhere. And for all of us who remember the cultural movement of Tony Hawk's fandom at the time, THPS 2 was the game that improved on the original in every possible way.
Bigger levels, more skaters, more opportunities to combine your moves and even the ability to create your own levels. It was a veritable feast of skate-gaming goodness, the perfect local multiplayer game and a sumptuously playable single player experience all in one.
The soundtrack remains one of the finest collections of songs in gaming history too - a solid mix of Rage Against the Machine, Papa Roach and Anthrax rattling through your earholes as you soared through the air.
In short it was a game that defined a generation, but in a wider context, this helped get people outside and onto skateboards, encouraged millions to check out the requisite bands on the soundtrack, and ensured we sunk literal hundreds of hours trying to nail every high score.
A monumental achievement and you can play as Spider-Man, but the second-best game of all time. Not quite.
