Plot twists are a storytelling device people have obsessed over for decades, and the gaming industry is no different. Shocking revelations like BioShock's "Would you kindly?" reveal, Aerith's death in Final Fantasy VII, or your role as the villain in Shadow of the Colossus have left players with their mouths on the ground for as long as games have had stories. It seems that gamers love to have the rug pulled from under their feet and their minds rocked by dramatic shifts in direction.

However, while the previously mentioned plot twists are out in the open for all to see, some fly completely under the radar.

The following games decided that not everyone deserved to see their massively shocking plot twists, rewarding only the most curious or eagle-eyed players. Some required jumping through hoops, others were locked behind DLC paywalls, a few were even hidden away in collectables. Regardless, they all concealed major revelations in obscure places.

This list will contain spoilers for all games discussed. This warning goes double for the entry on Outer Wilds, as discovery is a significant part of the game's appeal.

10. The Truth Behind The Heart (Dishonored)

Arkane's Dishonored series puts plenty of wicked tools in your hands, ranging from killer weapons to clever gadgets. However, one of the most fascinating - and grotesque - is the Heart, a mystical object that helps you discover hidden collectables and whispers secrets to you if you squeeze it. It's a creepy yet useful tool. But if you point it in the right places and at the right people, you'll find it hides a shocking secret.

It turns out that the Heart is made from that of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, whose death sets Dishonored's story in motion. While the game never explicitly states this, it's alluded to many times if you use it right, such as pointing it at Daud or Hiram Burrows and hearing the Heart lament trusting them. It also references having been to Dunwall Tower with Corvo before, as well as dialogue hints from Granny Rags about its nature.

Luckily for those who missed this well-hidden twist in the first game, Dishonored 2 took the subtle allusions to The Heart's origin and blew them out of the water, officially revealing the truth in a far more straightforward manner.
