1. First Match In Any Online Shooter
You ever seen a body crumple to the floor after you've fried someone with a laser rifle? It's both terrifying and beautiful - an indicator that someone's life has been taken, and also that your target has been hit, your mission accomplished. Despite this, that first match, and that first kill, is a big moment for any gamer. In that first ever online shooter match you play (Serious Sam, in my case), you still have that awareness in the back of your mind that these are real people you're playing against, sitting in chairs in front of screens in some distant corner of the world, and feeling real human emotions when you take them out. With our desensitised mindsets today, we're too busy thinking about surviving, or the next move, to spare a thought for the person we just mowed down on the battlefield, but in that first ever match, the pressure of essentially showcasing your skills in front of a bunch of fellow gamers is huge. Each kill feels momentous, and that relief of getting your first kill ever in an online shooter - proving that you can handle yourself against other humans - is a massive moment of validation. What was your greatest 'first time' moment in video game history? Let us know in the comments!
