10 Overblown Video Game Controversies
5. Pillars Of Eternity – Transphobic Poetry
An in-game poem could be found on the memorial of a gentleman named Firedorn. It read:
“Here lies Firedorn, a hero in bed.
He once was alive, but now he's dead.
The last woman he bedded turned out a man,
And crying in shame, off a cliff he ran.”
Some might argue that it was just a bit of dark humour about a dopey, sex-driven macho man who is punished for sleeping around, and accidentally ends up sleeping with a man. Thus, his idiocy resulted in his demise.
A small minority openly decried that the poem was transphobic and trans-misogynistic. It made headlines quickly, brewing up tensions in the gaming community.
Nothing in the poem openly decries those who have changed their gender, yet it didn't stop the backlash. Eventually, the poem was eventually replaced with:
“Here lies Firedorn, a bard, a poet
He was also a card, but most didn't know it
A poem he wrote in jest was misread
They asked for blood, so now he's just dead.”
Ouch. Firedorn himself wrote a post both apologizing while scratching his head on the matter. It was a fine example of putting 2 and 2 together to make 37. A simple, tongue-in-cheek poem, interpreted as four lines of spite and malice. A dicey decision on the developer's end, nonetheless.
