10 RIDICULOUS Reasons Games Had To Be Changed

8. The Devs Didn't Want To Upset A New Employee (Phantasy Star II)

Have you ever had the feeling of starting a new job and trying so hard to impress the brass that you over do it? In any case, it's hard to imagine the higher-ups being unhappy with your work, but not telling you you're doing something wrong. Unless you're Sega, in which case, some devs are more than happy to keep your work in the final product, even if they aren't too keen on it.

A 1993 developer interview with staff who worked on the seminal sci-fi RPG Phantasy Star II tells such a story.

According to game designer Kotaro Hayashida, the design of the game's dungeons was passed over to a new employee. This employee "kind of overdid it", leading to a slew of overdesigned dungeons that made the game "more about complex dungeons than anything else," which wasn't the original plan.

However, rather than scrapping the work of this new employee, the game's writer/director, Chieko Aoki, decided that she didn't want to hurt their feelings and waste all their effort. Therefore, their work was kept and used, even if it was "with some mixed feelings," as per Hayashida.

So, the original plan of the game was altered because the bosses didn't want to discourage their new employee. Now that's a wholesome work environment.
