10 RPG Character Deaths That BROKE You

The tears flow every time we lose these legends!

Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt RED

Video game NPCs tend to have it rough. The majority of them are simply there to serve the player, with enemy NPCs getting destroyed to make them feel powerful, quest-givers happily providing information to send them on the path to adventure, and big bad villains being the ultimate goal to take out. But some non-player characters burrow right into your heart, charming you with their personalities, relationships, and place in the game.

Of course, falling for a character means that your heart will feel like it's been rammed by a truck if/when they die.

Character death is something gamers often have to deal with, and the RPG genre is particularly adept at breaking you with it. The following ten characters are prime examples, as their deaths had you crying while thinking to yourself, "They're not even real, so why does it hurt so much?"

An honourable mention goes to Aerieth from Final Fantasy VII. She's usually a shoo-in for lists like this, but has been done to death (awkward), so it feels right to give some other characters the spotlight.

A major SPOILER WARNING is in effect for every entry.

10. Your Dog (Fable II)

Cyberpunk 2077
Lionhead Studios

Everyone knows the one narrative line that you should never cross: don't kill pets. Seeing an animal die in a story is about as heartbreaking as it gets, especially if it's one you've spent a lot of time with. However, Fable II said "Hold my beer" when looking at this trope, as the game happily kills off your beloved pooch, hitting you with emotional damage equal to the full blast of a blunderbuss.

Your canine companion never leaves your side throughout this game, pestering you with hidden treasure spots and acting as a source of company across the land of Albion. Sadly, just before the game's grand finale, your lovable mutt leaps in front of a speeding bullet to save you, killing it instantly.

One of the hardest things about your dog's death is the sudden loneliness you feel, having lost that ever-present companion who's been with you since the beginning. Now, you can revive your dog at the end of the game, but at the cost of thousands of innocent people, making it a questionable choice - still, no one would blame you.
