Even in a contemporary society where video games are generally accepted by the mainstream, it's still the opinion of many that games are above all else a mind-numbing, time-wasting tool.

But of course, as anyone who's ever picked up a controller in their life knows, the vast majority of video games are exercises in mental simulation, whether testing co-ordination or more complex problem solving.

Though there are absolutely games which are played simply to mindlessly unwind after a tough day at the office, scientific studies are increasingly supporting the notion that video games can aid long-term mental acuity throughout a person's life.

Moderation is key, of course, as playing anything to excess will not be helpful for a person's mental well-being, but the many non-gamers who consider an evening of gaming comparable to passing out in front of the TV watching a mindless reality show are totally wrong.
