While not everything Hideo Kojima creates is a work of art (despite what hardcore fans of the stealth-action series would have you believe), he’s certainly took us all by surprise with some of the secrets his team manage to sneak into his games.

In retrospect, considering the series is all about bipedal mech-robots firing nukes, while a cloned super-sneaky dude who loves hiding in cardboard boxes battles with a psychic and a muscle-bound raven tamer, it’s not surprising to see such barmy inclusions as the Monster Hunter missions.

After stumbling across Trenya, one of the talking felines from the Monster Hunter universe, it invites Big Boss to hunt some monsters, albeit with lots of bad cat puns.

You best be armed to the teeth, ‘cos these are some ruddy big critters you’ll be fighting against. Each can be fought twice, on a morning and an evening version of a very wide piece of island. One of them even invades your base.

Rathalos flies and spits fireballs, Tigrex charges head-on, and Gear REX launches its own bones. It can even fire a red laser from its tail. Knocking them out will offer bonus loot, for those who like an even bigger challenge.

Since there are so many small critters trying to distract you by knocking you down, bringing a buddy or two makes the hunt much more fun - and fair.

Blowing up nuclear bomb-launching robots is one thing, but an island full of monsters was not on the agenda.
