Ezio de Auditore da Firenze took the world by storm when he debuted in Assassin's Creed II. He went on to appear in three spin-offs, which have been ported to multiple systems over the years. He's appeared in various short films and crossed over to other franchises, including Soul Calibur and Fortnite.

Ezio is so astoundingly popular, it's easy to forget he's not the main character of the series, but remains who millions picture when Assassin's Creed is mentioned.

There is no trick to Ezio's allure - the reason why he's beloved is because he's well-written and excellently designed. Rather than starting off as a badass, Ezio's early life was etched in tragedy. After his family was murdered, he vowed to dedicate his life to avenging them. Taken in by The Order, we watched him turn from a troubled teen into a vicious mercenary.

Although the protagonist of the previous instalment, Altair, was compelling, Ezio's flaws made him more relatable and entertaining. His banter with certain characters, especially Leonardo Da Vinci, is so riveting, it's hard not to become immersed in his story.

Although Assassin's Creed has devised many popular characters, no one has come close to snatching Ezio's crown.
