10 Video Game Cliffhangers That Will Never Be Resolved

6. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II

Both games in the Dark Alliance series end on a cliffhanger, and while the ending of the first game was addressed, the sequel wasn't so lucky.

Dark Alliance II is a fun yet formulaic fantasy adventure that isn't exactly remembered as one of the great RPGs of all time, but will certainly live in infamy if only for the messy behind-the-scenes issues that destroyed the future of the franchise.

Set within the city of Baldur's Gate, the game has its five playable characters facing off against the evil vampire Mordoc SeLanmere, who ends up causing chaos within the city when he turns its entire population into zombies. This leads to a final confrontation with Mordoc that sees the heroes kill him, restoring the citizens back to normal and saving the day. But it's not over yet.

The game then cuts to a room with a man talking to a sarcophagus (no kidding), with the two talking about how Mordoc has "failed", and that Baldur's Gate still stands. The sarcophagus then asserts that they'll get the job done themselves, raising an army and preparing a barge to (presumably) storm the city and mess it up.

But we never got to see this epic battle. Dark Alliance III was in the works even before Dark Alliance II came out, but when developer Black Isle Studios was closed down (after publisher Interplay fell into financial trouble), it was permanently shelved.
