10 Video Game Plot Twists That Totally BROKE You

1. Gustave Dies In Act 1 - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a game jam-packed with fascinating twists and turns, but none of these reveals hit harder than the absolute sledgehammer of a twist that drops at the end of Act 1.

At this point in the game, about 10-or-so hours into the main story, players are likely firmly attached to their central party, led of course by our "protagonist" Gustave, voiced with gusto by the great Charlie Cox.

But the party is then attacked by the man who is ultimately the game's real big bad, Renoir, who kills Gustave as he fights to defend teammate Maelle.

It's such a shocking and unexpected moment that most players likely assumed Gustave, whose face is plastered all over the game's marketing and is voiced by a major Hollywood actor, would somehow be spared from his fate.

But Gustave is indeed dead and gone, at which point he's very swiftly replaced by a new party leader, Verso.

Given that Gustave was depicted as such a good-hearted, heroic protagonist leading up to his demise, this was absolutely crushing, though Verso certainly won fans over in his own way.
