10 Video Game Plot Twists That Totally BROKE You

Silent Hill 2 is one of the most masterfully oppressive video games of all time - a waking nightmare of a game in which protagonist James Sunderland journeys to the hellish town after receiving a letter from his dead wife, Mary.

It's established early on that Mary died of an illness three years prior, but later in the game, it's revealed that James actually killed Mary himself, smothering her to death in bed.

The horrors James encounters throughout Silent Hill 2 are largely a manifestation of his own guilt, though the game leaves his true motivations somewhat ambiguous - was he trying to end Mary's suffering, spare himself the prolonged torment, or more likely, a soupy combination of the two?

Either way, knowing that James killed his own wife for likely complicated reasons forces players to reconsider the entire story within a whole new context. 

And this is without even getting into the many possible endings which await James, most of them different flavours of bleak.
