Who doesn’t love a good remake?

In the worlds of TV, film and gaming, remakes are very much in fashion at the moment. The benefits are obvious: there's usually a built-in audience ready to buy, the creators can revisit and improve aspects of the original that have aged badly or didn’t work the first time around, and bring the original story to an entirely new audience.

Of course, it could be argued that the reason remakes are so beloved by the creators is that they can push out a new release without having to come up with an original idea, but the best remakes use the original as just a starting point; a guide to create an excellent experience for the customer, with all the benefits of a new production.

With that in mind, here are ten games that would benefit from a fresh coat of paint. Be warned, minor spoilers will follow…

10. Unreal Tournament

This one’s a slight cheat since there has been a crowdsourced early build available for a while now, but by nature it is restricted to PC only.

The original game, released back in 1999, was a trendsetter for several different competitive game modes for first person shooters.

Challenges such as Capture the Flag, Domination (teams compete for control of various strategic locations to score points on a map) and Assault (a team attempts to defend objectives on a map from the invading team, then they switch places and see which team can complete the objectives quickest) provided a great variety of gameplay, making the game excellent fun for LAN parties.

Obviously, online play has exploded in popularity since that time, and while a couple of sequels appeared almost annually, giving the series an eSports slant, the time is ripe for the series to make the jump to consoles. The magnificent array of weapons available, mutators to customise the session rules and the fast and furious gameplay would be a great addition to the current console shooter landscape.
