10 Video Games That Only Scored High Because Of Hype

1. Final Fantasy VII: Remake

Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Square Enix

Final Fantasy VII is an undisputed classic and for over a decade, the fanbase was pining for a modern rendition of the title. The hype for Final Fantasy VII: Remake was unprecedented, a steady build-up that began with a bombshell of an announcement at E3 2015. Things appeared to be shaping up well after much of the development went on behind the scenes at Square Enix. One controversial release model generated some discussion and when it finally arrived earlier this year, Remake ended up being dramatically different from the original game. Not everyone was happy with it.

For better or worse, this new take on Final Fantasy VII offers a substantially longer quest while giving some supporting characters larger roles. While the latter was welcomed by fans, a good portion took issue with the former, feeling the game was padded out with content that didn't contribute to the main story. Seemingly lost on the mainstream critics, Final Fantasy VII: Remake scored highly regardless, leaving the community wondering how this episodic model will pan out for the next decade.
