10 Video Games You Bought CONSOLES To Play

4. Doom (PC)

Final Doom
id Software

Now we have the originator of the first-person-shooter genre. Before Master Chief, there was Doomguy and upon its 1993 release, the game was fast, frenetic and outrageously bloody. It quickly took the community by storm and sales figures skyrocketed on its native PC platform.

The game got so successful, ID Software were making upwards of $100,000 every day as more and more gamers flocked to the title. Through much of the decade it would continue to climb the charts. Its shareware method of distribution allowed it to reach an enormous audience.

Doom may not have been an exclusive to the PC platform forever, but it did drive a drastic uptake in adoption for that system. In addition, that version also remained the best of the bunch with both online multiplayer and mod support that was missing on its console counterparts. This would be expanded firther in both sequels and "Final Doom", a compilation which brought the whole package together.

Following its release, the title of "Doom-clone" became a common phrase for any game wishing to emulate its success and the franchise became a household name in the decades that followed. It was all thanks to this one release that kickstarted the PC platform in the early nineties.
