2014's The Crew was a totally forgettable online racer that received heavily mixed reviews upon release, seemingly killing any prospect of Ubisoft scoring themselves another lucrative franchise.

Not quite, though. The Crew 2 was shockingly announced at last year's E3, and from everything we've seen so far, it's looking like the game could be a colossal improvement over its middling predecessor.

Though it's definitely sensible to keep your expectations close to the ground, the more colourful aesthetic and smart decision to include land, air and sea vehicles should make it a broader and more accessible effort.

Furthermore, the grindy RPG-esque aspects of the original game are gone in favour of a more free-wheeling invitation to do whatever the hell you want, with press previews comparing it favourably to the brilliant Forza Horizon series.

Don't be shocked if The Crew 2 is one of the most-improved video game sequels in recent memory, surging to an 80-ish Metascore (compared to the original's disappointing 61 on PS4).
