18 Essential Landmark Titles Every Gamer Must Play

8. The Last Of Us

Ask any gamer what matters most in a really standout title and they'll likely give you an abundance of different answers. Gameplay, graphics, story, strong characters, and more. Most games are lucky to tick just a few of those boxes, but The Last Of Us has it all. It presents players with more than just a set of characters and tasks you'll really care about. The want to complete the game is not just for yourself or for the sake of unlocking achievements, but for them. LoU may feature the perhaps all-too-familiar setting of a post-apocalyptic world, but it presents it and its occupants as more than just a film set and an ensemble of actors. Coupled with gameplay that is intuitive and fun, the package is a truly top drawer experience the likes of which hasn't been seen that often in recent years. It might seem unusual that a game so seemingly perfect is ranked eighth on this list, but despite being a landmark title, it isn't quite iconic enough. At least, not yet. A film adaptation is already in the works, meaning more players being swayed into playing the original material. The way The Last Of Us is heading, it looks set to be one of the last generation's defining games - perhaps given time it'll climb its way to the very top.
