After the legendary year for gaming that was 2017, 2018 has a huge mountain to climb in order to live up to it, but with some of the massively anticipated AAA titles due for release over the next 12 months, there's every chance it could be another banner year for the medium.

That said, as great as 2017 was, it also served as an apt reminder that video game publishers aren't your friends, and if you let them, they'll take you a ride in the pursuit of extra profits. So, while these 18 games could and should end up among the year's very best titles, it's entirely possible that things don't go as swimmingly as everyone hopes.

From games that have been in gestation for a suspiciously long time, to titles that could be the next victims of excessive monetisation, and projects seemingly destined to be hamstrung by their own ambitious production, these huge games due out in 2018 could end up as crushing disappointments.

It's always sensible for gamers to keep their expectations firmly in the middle and wait for reviews before throwing their hard-earned money at even the most reliable properties, and it's likely that at least some of these games will prove why...
