20 Beloved Video Games No One Admits They Hated

10. Final Fantasy VII

Is there a more influential video game than 1997's Final Fantasy VII? Arguably not. The game that introduced JRPGs to many western gamers has developed an almost mythical reputation over the years since its release. The adventures of Cloud, Tifa and the gang have inspired countless JRPGs over the years, and even a complete reimagining that's been split into a Final Fantasy VII trilogy of games for modern consoles.

With groundbreaking turn-based combat, a huge world to explore, and a story that had gamers on the edge of their seats, it's easy to understand not just Final Fantasy VII's success, but its importance to the industry. However, it goes without saying that turn-based games are a completely different experience to real-time action games. For many, Final Fantasy VII was their very first foray into the world of turn-based combat, and while some will have been won over by the game's story and overall charm, there will have inevitably been plenty who just didn't gel with the combat at first, or the sheer amount of text there is to read through in conversations that aren't voiced.

With the critical acclaim it garnered on release, and its reputation only growing bigger over time, those who couldn't get to grips with magic points, materia and summons will have found their voices quickly drowned out, and its likely they would've eventually realized exactly why the game is as culturally significant as it is.
