Tetris 99 quite ingeniously reworked it, then, into a battle royale framework, as players sought to out-Tetris 98 other players in order to be the last one standing.

Tetris 99 finds a perfect balance between not encroaching upon the elemental Tetris gameplay too much, and yet finding a clever way to make it hyper-competitive in an online environment.

Being able to send additional rows to other players by clearing one of your own is a neat, at times hilariously cruel rub, and yet even in its most frantic multiplayer moments, Tetris 99 never loses the essence of what makes Tetris so compulsively addictive.

Its success also led developer Arika to follow up with a slew of other battle royale-centric Switch spin-offs, namely Pac-Man 99, Super Mario Bros. 35 and F-Zero 99.
