16. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
The beautiful cinematic reveal trailer for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad actually made it look pretty damn great, that finally somebody got around to making an open world AAA action game based on the hallowed IP.
But it soon became clear that the excitement was entirely misplaced, and that Kingsroad was actually a free-to-play game for mobile and PC platforms from Netmarble - the South Korean outfit infamous for producing low-effort gacha slop with aggressive monetisation systems.
And so, expectations immediately sank through the floor for Kingsroad, which true to form was chided for its intrusive money-grabbing mechanics, grindy gameplay, and general lack of polish.
While it received some scattered praise for at least attempting to capture the atmosphere of Westeros, this was easily cancelled out by the overwhelming cynicism with which the game was produced, and how that seeped into basically every pore of its gameplay.
Who didn't see this coming once they knew who was making it?
