If you had to summarise the Animal Crossing franchise in one word, it would have to be - adorable. As your avatar travels around the area to fish and hunt for bugs, anthropomorphic kittens, ponies, tanookis, and every other cute animal imaginable will help you in your endeavours. Characters like Tom Nook and Isabelle are so beloved for their purity and innocence, they've become hugely influential, even outside Animal Crossing. Although some characters aren't friendly or are modelled on creatures that aren't considered cute like boars or hippos, nearly every villager in the series looks adorable.

However, I say "nearly ever villager" because there are a couple of critters that really, really ugly. Whether it's because of a bad design, or the fact that a character's based on a weird animal, some villagers are anything but cuddly.

Despite the fact some villagers are made unintentionally unattractive, there are some that were supposed to be cute but somehow turned out so horrid, they feel more suited in a slasher movie than a children's video game. Here are the 20 Animal Crossing characters that got battered by the ugly stick.

20. Stitches

Stitches is one of the few characters in the Animal Crossing series that is technically not an animal since he's a stuffed toy. This teddy bear is laid back and has a fondness for food, relaxing, and fishing.

Even though teddies are cute, Stitches is a little unsettling because of one simple factor - his eyes. Instead of having traditional eyeballs, this chap has two x-shaped stitches. Because x-shaped eyes are associated with corpses, Stitches looks like a wandering zombie. He's even creepier when he's motionless since it looks like someone just left out a random dead body in the village.

If the developers gave Stitches conventional eyeballs, he had the potential to be among the cutest villagers instead of one of the most unnerving.
