11. Losing the Pyramids - Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003)

Lara Croft has had a rocky time on the screen, kicking off with the Angelina Jolie-starring Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001, and now heading towards a long-prophesised live action show with Sophie Turner in the role. Nobody has really hit the nail on the head, but Jolie’s Lara is still the one to beat, nailing the look and the action, if not the broader feel of the games or the compelling plot. Jolie’s outfits kept young men in the cinema for a sequel, Cradle of Life, and there would have even been a third one if the actress had wanted to stay on.

Cradle of Life puts archaeologist-adventurer Lara’s skills to the test as she goes on the hunt for the mythical Pandora's Box, racing against criminal boffin Jonathan Reiss (Ciarán Hinds), who seeks it for his own personal gain. Lara’s old partner, Terry (Gerard Butler), is along for the ride, and between them they manage to deliver just enough globe-trotting action and excitement to keep the film buoyant.

And yet, the thing makes its first major misstep in the opening sequence. The highly intelligent archaeologist Lara mentions that the Lunar Temple of Alexander the Great, which she is seeking at the film’s beginning, is “the greatest discovery since the Pyramids.” There’s only one problem: the pyramids – you know, those great big pointy things you can see for miles around – were never lost. A rookie mistake on the writers' part, and a black mark against the film's credibility.
