15 Video Game Mysteries Answered Years Later
1. Dark Souls: What Was the Pendant For?
FromSoftware's first Dark Souls title was nothing short of revolutionary. Its success was such that it even managed to spawn an entire sub-genre, the Soulslike, with dozens of new titles swelling its ranks on a yearly basis.
In what has now become customary in this series, Dark Souls players get to choose from a bunch of in-game items to help them on the start of their arduous quest. These range from things like the Black Firebomb which gives players an additional consumable weapon to use, to the Master Key that can be used to unlock alternative areas. However, one item in the original game stuck out as particularly strange right from the get go. The Pendant. Its description stated ''A simple pendant with no effect. Even so, pleasant memories are crucial to survival on arduous journeys'', so its use was a mystery to say the least. What really piqued players' interest was when FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, was asked in an interview which starting item he would choose, and he confirmed he'd go for the Pendant.
This sent the internet fanbase down a massive rabbit hole as thousands of players tried to establish the item's true use, but despite the efforts, this was completely in vain. Nobody could find what it actually did. Over a year after the game's release in 2011, Miyazaki admitted in another interview that this was a prank on his part. He recommended the Pendant simply to send players on a wild goose chase, confirming it had no special use in the actual game.
