25 Video Game Mechanics That Simply Don't Work In Real Life

12. Level Restrictions On Buying Things And Going Places

"I'm sorry sir, you're just not the right level to buy this tub of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream'. said the cashier in the supermarket. 'Please come back when you've levelled up some more and achieved the prerequisite ice cream eating stats."

Imagine how horrible this would be. It could even be applied to visiting areas - you'd have people completely separated from each other by level gates, preventing you from going a step further unless you're sufficiently leveled up.

There's also items you are allowed to buy, but you're not allowed to use them unless you grind yourself up a few levels. Want to wear that new snazzy hat? You need to first wear several other lesser hats in order to be worthy of doing so.

There's little to be gained from a shopkeeper withholding their items until you are of a sufficient level - they've got to make a profit, after all.
