4. The Manchester Baby (1948)
This bouncing baby tipped the scales at 1 ton and ate 3500 watts of electricity. Built just after the war, it was the first computer to electronically store its programmes. It had all the basic elements of our modern-day devices.
The Manchester Baby grew up quickly and changed its name to the Ferranti Mark 1 – the world’s first commercially available computer.
