3. Born Ready - Cyber Shadow

A game coded by one person, Aarne Hunziker, who grew up hacking established games to play with their visuals and AI coding in general, Cyber Shadow is the first release from Yacht Club since the immaculate Shovel Knight and its many years of stellar DLC.

While Yacht Club were largely in a publishing role, they did help Hunziker out with advice along the way, producing an action platformer that is pixel-perfect in its execution of where to stand, which enemies to attack in which order, and precisely how to progress.

Get any one part of that makeup wrong and you're back to the last checkpoint, which is why the idea of finishing without any health or magic upgrades at all is absolute lunacy.

Cyber Shadow is that old-school, grit-your-teeth-and-try-again style of 2D game, but it's also one of the highlights of 2021.
