As far as wish-fulfillment is concerned, there's nothing quite like video games. Being fair, it's not hard to see the appeal of the medium we can be space marines, bounty hunters, boxing champions or even an entire bloody football team without having to ever leave our sofas. So when it comes to empowerment, we can do a whole lot worse. However, when we're told for the umpteenth time that we're the universe's only hope, it can get a bit grating and these stories, designed to big us up as much as possible, all sort of blur together. Yet occasionally certain characters stand out, even among the crowded video game hinterland. These characters are just so damned impressive that you can't help but remember them, and in a world where supermen are ten-a-penny that's quite an achievement.
