8 Video Game Comebacks We FINALLY Got (With A Twist)
4. Contra Returns... As An Isometric Shooter (Where Guns OVERHEAT)
I cannot tell you the number of hours I spent as a kid playing Contra III: The Alien Wars on the SNES with my cousin, nor the amount of fun I had doing so as honestly, these were some of the purest gaming experiences I've ever had. The challenge, the relentless action, and of course the arguments over power-ups made this game so exciting to play each and every time, and clearly, we weren't the only ones enamored with the franchise as the title is renowned as being one of Konami's finest.
However, that publisher name should start rining alarm bells because as I've already shown with Silent Hill, Konami handles their IPs with the delicacy of a surgeon trying to remove your kidney using only steel toe capped boots, and they absolutely kicked the piss out of the series with their "glorious return to form" that was Contra: Rogue Corps.
This game truly earned its namesake, as it went completely rogue when it came to things like the gameplay and aesthetics fans expected to see.
The isometric shooter perspective wasn't terrible, but unfortunately, it immediately marked the title as being a part of a genre with a lot of competition, and many wished the title would have stuck to a 2D perspective as a proud reminder of its roots.
Hell, thanks to the fact that your guns overheat, titles like Dead Ops, the jokey mini-game from the Call of Duty franchise, actually did this style and gameplay better!
