Don't Starve was one of the breakout indie hits of 2013, but the open-world survival game has only gotten better with time. Expansions and add-ons have expanded what was already a solid foundation, with players being thrown into an imaginative, Tim Burton-inspired wasteland and tasked with fending off against an environment that's constantly trying to kill you.

However the title really took off when a separate game, Don't Starve Together, let players face the horrors with friends. Retaining the addictive survival gameplay of the original release, nothing was really lost by adding other players into the mix, and if anything the tension was only heightened even further, as you have far more to lose.

Consequently, being able to create your own sanctuary away from the encroaching darkness feels far more significant than it does in single-player. There, for the most part, you were simply trying to survive, whereas when you have a whole troop by your side, you're looking to prosper and make a home. Even if it eventually all comes crashing down and you have to start again anyway.
